cirqu’9

The Festival cirqu' returned to the new Alte Reithalle: we were delighted to be able to rethink the possibilities of this fantastic space and use it for what it is: a truly large and spacious hall.

This year, the audience didn't necessarily sit; they might have to stand or even lie down. Perhaps they even dined somewhere.

The space of the Alte Reithalle was used to its full extent by one of the artists in particular: Chloé Moglia climbed across the hall along a 40-meter-long pole. Her performance was originally created for the “Grand Palais” in Paris, where the 50th anniversary of the moon landing was celebrated in 2019. At cirqu’, the artist showed her high-altitude experiment to the Aarau audience.

The start of the festival was not precisely determined this year. It was possible to come across acrobats dressed in black on the streets of Aarau in the days leading up to June 15, quite by chance. You might also come across a wooden sculpture consisting of 150 wooden poles that slowly wandered through Kasinopark.

On Friday, June 16, 2023, the black-clad performers, who incidentally belonged to Compagnie XY, officially opened the festival. The meeting point was the Stadthöfli. The open-air event was intended for everyone and was freely accessible. A new feature this year was that cirqu' set the focus of the program: Frenchman Johann Le Guillerm, one of the defining figures of contemporary circus, showed four works from his diverse oeuvre. You can find out more in the program.
