Nyloïd

A black stage and bright, cold light. Three six-meter-long nylon strands are connected to motors at one end and firmly joined together at the upper end. They stand in space, resembling the simplest stable geometric shape, a pyramid, albeit a somewhat sunken pyramid.

The intricate strands come to life as the motors whir and twist them into motion. The interconnected parts form a delicate yet robust structure that struggles to escape. Each shift and adjustment triggers a symphony of sounds - rushes, gurgles, murmurs, rumbles - that seem to give it voice. It's as if the metallic, alienated entity is alive, screaming to its own movements with a language all its own. Yet when the motion subsides and the mechanism lies still, an eerie calm settles over the scene and an uncanny power fills the room.

Cod.Act puts its artistic work at the service of the exploration of material and technology. Precise robots, however, are not of interest. The idea is to create apparatuses that react unpredictably and thus give chance a chance to invent artistic or perhaps aesthetic outcomes.

Cod.Act was awarded the Swiss Grand Prix for Music in 2019.
